STATE-OWNED WATERS
Metsähallitus manages extensive fishing waters in Suomussalmi, including large lakes as well as numerous small lakes and ponds located within state-owned forests. To simplify fishing arrangements, fishing rights for certain water areas have been leased or exchanged with local jointly owned fishing associations. The locations of state-owned waters can be explored using the Retkikartta.fi map service.
Popular sport fishing destinations include Hossa, Yli-Vuokki and Seitenahveninen. Other rapids fishing locations can be found on the Piispajoki, Mustajoki, Perankajoki and Korvua–Näljänkäjoki rivers, which is a joint permit area, as well as on several smaller rivers.
