Three Rapids in One Trip

For some years now our circle of fishing friends have opened the season with a trip to Hyrynsalmi. We start in late May by fishing at three white-water destinations in succession, each with a different character. During the course of one weekend, we rinse the winter dust off our lines by fishing the Luvankoski Rapid, the River Lietejoki and the Nuottikoski Rapid.

The Nuottikoski Rapids – fishing for rainbow in turbulent white water

The last leg of our opening weekend sees us heading for the Nuorttikoski Rapid. Are rainbow trout more gullible than brown trout? The Nuorttikoski Rapid is wide and turbulent. Along the lower reaches, above the bridge, we spot several anglers casting lures. I fish the water casting a small Lotto spinner, a large iron spoon and just about everything in between. I finally find a lure that the fish like: a small, pink wobbler. It’s not long before I’m taking home a good-sized rainbow.
